Machine-Augmented Composites Materials (MACterials) are composites that contain many, small, embedded simple machines. Due to the presence of these embedded machines, these composites have properties that cannot be obtained by other means.
The goals of this task developing the analytical tools and manufacturing methods for using machine-augmented composite materials in infrastructure applications have been successfully achieved.
The need to use low-cost materials in many infrastructure applications precludes the use of expensive flame-retardant polymers or fire-protective coatings.
Therefore, an appreciation by civil engineers of the fire properties of polymer composites is important in the safe design and durability assessment of structures. Important reference book on composites materials manufacturing technologies from Vietnamese, as well Japanese and Canadian researchers; Edited by three internationally regarded materials science professors, this book is an important expansion of a series presenting composites research from Canada and Japan.

Infrastructure Applications. Composites have a long history of use throughout the infrastructure industry. They are often utilized as reinforcing materials in repair and retrofitting of existing infrastructure applications. Composites also are the material of choice for corrosion-resistant pipes and tanks.
And more bridge decks are now made from FRP than ever before. Abstract. partially replacing conventional materials in civil engineering type applications. Several attempts have been made at transferring composite technology developed for aerospace appUcations into the construction industry (1, 2) ~ e task proved to be more complex than initially expected due to various factors, including large scale and cost constraints ofinfrastructure applications.

Applying composites in the infrastructure industry Consultation during every project phase The use of composites is changing the face of the construction industry. Lightweight and low maintenance structures such as bridge decks and lock gates are increasingly being made using composite materials, such as fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP).

Architecture Applications. The molding freedom of composites has contributed to their popularity in decorative architectural applications, including cornices, columns, domes, cupolas and balustrades. But today, composites in architecture extend far beyond décor into structural applications.
Chapters 16 and 17 discuss the development of the advanced polymer composite material applications in bridge engineering.
They demonstrate the innovative types of components and structures which have been developed from FRP composite materials and the most advantageous way to employ composites in bridge engineering.
